Founded in Myitkyina Township, Kachin State, by three young environmental defenders.
The Kachin Environmental Justice Center (KEJC) was established in early January 2023 in Myitkyina Township, Kachin State, Myanmar, by three young environmental defenders in response to the growing environmental injustice and human rights violations that intensified following the 1 February 2021 military coup.
As mining expansion and environmental destruction accelerated, Kachin communities increasingly faced armed conflict, displacement, and the loss of livelihoods. In response to these urgent challenges, the founders created KEJC to document environmental and human rights harms, support affected communities, and advocate for environmental justice.
Since its establishment, KEJC has brought together additional members who share a strong commitment to protecting communities and promoting environmental and human rights in Kachin State.
A just and sustainable Kachin State, free from social, environmental, and ecological harm, where Indigenous peoples and local communities fully enjoy justice, the rule of law, and the protection of their human rights.
To protect and promote the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities in Kachin State by preventing environmental destruction and social injustice caused by development projects. KEJC works through community empowerment, legal advocacy, documentation, and collaboration with national and international partners to achieve justice, uphold the rule of law, and ensure the protection of human rights and the environment.
